He served in the US Army from 1952 – 1954 where he was blinded in his right eye by grenade shrapnel. Joseph and Mary have two children.

Robert joined the US Air Force in 1952, just after the US Army Air Corp became the US Air Force, and served four years as a jet engine mechanic.
